The investment, planned for 2027 and 2028, will expand data centre capacity, strengthen electricity and water infrastructure, and support skills training for 800,000 Malaysians.

KUALA LUMPUR: Google has announced plans to invest $15 billion in Malaysia during 2027 and 2028 to expand its data centre infrastructure, develop clean energy resources, improve water security and provide skills training for local workers.

The investment will include the construction of new data centre campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, building on Google’s first operational campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor.

According to the Alphabet-owned company, construction of the new facilities is expected to contribute an average of $1.1 billion annually to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and support more than 37,000 local jobs each year during the construction phase.

Once operational, the campuses are projected to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs annually, with average wages expected to be 45% higher than Malaysia’s national median.

Alphabet and Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat said the investment would support Malaysia’s development priorities by increasing computing capacity while strengthening local electricity and water infrastructure.

“This investment aligns with Malaysia’s development priorities, providing the foundational computing capacity to deliver the upside of innovation across the country while adding local power and water resources as our operations scale,” Porat said.

As part of the expansion, Google plans to add more than 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s national electricity grid. The company said it would cover the full cost of electricity consumed by its data centre campuses, as well as the direct infrastructure expenses required to connect the facilities to the national grid, in compliance with local regulations.

Google also outlined energy efficiency targets for its Malaysian operations. The new campuses are expected to achieve a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of between 1.12 and 1.14, a measure of how efficiently data centres use electricity.

The investment will also support initiatives to improve water security as Google’s data centre operations expand.

Alongside the infrastructure projects, Google announced four new training programmes aimed at equipping 800,000 Malaysians with additional skills over the next five years.
