Pioneer Cement manufacturing facility in Khushab, Punjab, with solar energy expansion plans

Pioneer Cement expands its renewable energy investment at its Khushab manufacturing facility

Pioneer Cement: Company Signs Deal for 15MW Battery Storage and 10MW Solar Expansion

The project at its Khushab manufacturing facility is expected to be completed by March 2027 as the company seeks to reduce electricity costs and reliance on the national grid.

Pioneer Cement Limited has signed an agreement to install a 15-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system and an additional 10MW solar power facility at its manufacturing plant in Khushab, Punjab, as part of its efforts to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce electricity costs.

In a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday, the company said it had entered into an agreement with Pragmatic Engineering Solutions FZE and China’s Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd. for the supply and installation of the systems at its Chenki manufacturing facility.

The battery energy storage system (BESS) will have a power capacity of 15MW and a storage capacity of 30 megawatt-hours (MWh). It will allow the company to store solar electricity generated during the day and use it during periods of peak demand.

According to Pioneer Cement, the project is expected to reduce its dependence on grid electricity, lower energy expenses and support grid stability. The installation is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2027. However, the company did not disclose the project’s investment cost or estimated financial savings.

The announcement follows the company’s November 3 disclosure that it had completed and energised a 28.265MW solar power plant at the same manufacturing facility. Pioneer Cement subsequently increased the plant’s capacity to 31MW, with the additional capacity expected to become operational within a month of the earlier announcement.

The company estimated that environmentally sustainable energy sources would meet approximately 45% of its annual electricity requirements following the commissioning of the solar project. It said the investment was expected to reduce electricity costs, improve operational efficiency and support profitability.

The additional 10MW solar installation announced on November 6 is separate from the previously disclosed expansion to 31MW. However, Pioneer Cement has not specified how the latest project will affect the share of its annual electricity requirements met through renewable energy.
