Federal Climate Secretary Tours Dawlance Karachi Plant, Spotlights Industry Shift to Ozone-Safe Refrigerator Manufacturing!

MoCC delegation reviews Dawlance’s UNIDO-supported cyclopentane conversion as Pakistan advances its commitments under the Montreal Protocol

Federal Climate Secretary Reviews Dawlance’s Green Manufacturing Transition

KARACHI, October 5, 2026: Federal Secretary, Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination (MoCC), Awais Manzur Sumra, visited Dawlance’s DPL1 manufacturing facility in Karachi on September 24, 2026, to review the company’s transition towards climate-friendly refrigerant and insulation technologies.

The visit focused on Dawlance’s efforts to adopt technologies that support ozone-layer protection while reducing climate-warming emissions, contributing to Pakistan’s commitments under the Montreal Protocol.

The Federal Secretary was accompanied by Dr. Zaigham Abbas, Deputy Director (Labs/NEQs), Pak-EPA; Syed Azmat Hussain Shah, Interim National Project Manager, National Ozone Unit (NOU), MoCC; and Muhammad Zia Ul Mustafa, Deputy Director (Admin), Pak-EPA, Islamabad.

Dawlance Converts Refrigerator Manufacturing to Cyclopentane Technology

A key focus of the delegation’s visit was Dawlance’s conversion to cyclopentane technology, undertaken with financial and technical assistance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the National Ozone Unit at the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination.

Cyclopentane is used in the insulation foam of refrigerators and freezers. The technology has zero ozone-depleting potential and a negligible global warming potential compared with the chemicals it replaces.

The delegation reviewed the project as an example of collaboration between the government, international development partners and Pakistan’s private sector to introduce environmentally responsible technologies at an industrial scale.

Dawlance Highlights Commitment to Sustainable Manufacturing

Commenting on the visit, Dawlance Chief Executive Officer Umar Ahsan Khan said sustainability has become a responsibility for manufacturers and highlighted the company’s transition to cyclopentane as an example of what Pakistani industry can achieve through cooperation among government institutions, international partners and businesses.

He said Dawlance would continue investing in cleaner technologies, energy-efficient appliances and responsible manufacturing practices to support environmental sustainability in Pakistan.

Manufacturing Operations Focus on Emissions and Energy Efficiency

During a detailed briefing, the MoCC delegation was informed about the environmental and climate implications associated with refrigerant use and the measures incorporated into Dawlance’s manufacturing operations.

The briefing covered the company’s efforts to support Pakistan’s national phase-down of ozone-depleting substances and substances with high global-warming potential.

The delegation also reviewed Dawlance’s broader sustainability initiatives across its manufacturing facilities, including emissions reduction, energy efficiency and resource conservation.

Industry Collaboration Supports Pakistan’s Environmental Commitments

Dawlance reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Pakistan’s climate and environmental objectives through responsible refrigerant transitions and sustainable manufacturing practices.

The company’s cyclopentane conversion highlights the role of industrial technology upgrades in helping manufacturers align production with environmental objectives while supporting Pakistan’s obligations under the Montreal Protocol.
