VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling Can Improve Connectivity, Says PTA

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised mobile phone users to review their network settings and activate advanced calling features to improve voice quality, reduce call connection times and maintain connectivity in areas with weak cellular signals.

In an advisory issued on October 15, the regulator highlighted the benefits of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Wi-Fi Calling, also known as Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi). It urged consumers to check whether their mobile phones, SIM cards and network operators support these technologies.

The guidance aims to help users make better use of existing mobile services by enabling compatible features that can improve calling performance without necessarily changing their mobile connections.

PTA Advises Users to Check 4G and LTE Settings

The PTA said users experiencing unclear voice quality or delays when connecting calls over 4G/LTE networks should check their device settings and ensure that the 4G/LTE option is enabled where available.

Consumers should also confirm that their mobile phones and SIM cards support 4G services to access the relevant network capabilities.

However, the availability and performance of advanced calling features depend on device compatibility, SIM support and the services offered by the respective mobile network operator.

VoLTE Can Improve Voice Quality and Call Connection Times

Voice over LTE allows users to make voice calls over a 4G network rather than relying on older network technologies for voice services.

According to the PTA, VoLTE can provide clearer voice quality and help calls connect faster when supported by the device and mobile operator.

To use the service, consumers should check their phone’s network or calling settings and confirm availability with their mobile operator. Enabling the feature alone may not be sufficient if the SIM card, device or network does not support it.

Wi-Fi Calling Can Help in Areas With Weak Signals

Wi-Fi Calling, or VoWiFi, enables compatible mobile phones to make calls through a Wi-Fi connection instead of relying exclusively on cellular signal coverage.

The feature can be particularly useful inside homes, basements and other locations where mobile reception is weak but a suitable Wi-Fi connection is available.

The PTA advised consumers to enable Wi-Fi Calling in their device settings and connect to a Wi-Fi network, subject to compatibility and operator support.

The feature can help address indoor coverage limitations, although its availability depends on the services provided by the user’s mobile operator.

Consumers Urged to Confirm Service Availability

The PTA encouraged users to contact their respective mobile operators for guidance on VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling availability, activation procedures and device compatibility.

Checking these requirements can help consumers determine which features are supported by their existing connections and whether additional configuration is needed.

The advisory highlights how relatively simple changes to phone settings may improve calling experiences for users who have compatible devices and access to supported network services.
