NBP Warmly Welcomes Mr. Imran Sarwar as its President & Chief Executive Officer

National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has welcomed the appointment of Mr. Imran Sarwar as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, bringing more than three decades of banking experience to the country’s leading financial institution.

Mr. Imran Sarwar has over 36 years of diverse experience across corporate, institutional and investment banking, along with credit and risk management. His professional career spans both Pakistan and international markets, giving him extensive exposure to banking leadership, strategic planning, risk governance and financial services.

His appointment comes as NBP continues to focus on strengthening its institutional position and expanding its role in supporting customers, businesses and Pakistan’s wider economy.

Mr. Imran Sarwar’s Banking Experience

Mr. Imran Sarwar most recently served at United Bank Limited (UBL) as Group Executive, Risk & Credit Policy and Chief Risk Officer.

During his tenure, he played an important role in strengthening the bank’s risk architecture and advancing its credit policy framework. His experience in risk and credit management is expected to bring valuable expertise to NBP as the bank continues to navigate an evolving financial and regulatory environment.

Before joining UBL, Mr. Sarwar held several senior leadership positions at Standard Chartered Bank. Among these was his role as Managing Director and Head of Corporate Banking for the UAE, where he gained significant experience in corporate banking and international financial markets.

Leadership and Board Experience

In addition to his executive banking career, Mr. Sarwar has contributed to the financial sector through board-level positions.

He has served on the boards of Khushhali Microfinance Bank and the Pakistan Mortgage Refinance Company (PMRC). These roles provided him with further exposure to risk management, corporate governance and policy matters across Pakistan’s financial sector.

His combination of executive management and board-level experience adds further depth to his professional profile as he takes charge of NBP.

Academic Background

Mr. Imran Sarwar holds a degree in Business and Accounting from Ohio Wesleyan University in the United States.

He also holds an LLB from the University of the Punjab, combining his business and accounting education with a legal background.

This academic foundation, together with his extensive banking career, has shaped his experience across financial management, credit, risk, governance and corporate banking.

What His Appointment Means for NBP

As President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sarwar will lead NBP at a time when Pakistan’s banking sector continues to undergo significant changes in technology, regulation, risk management and customer expectations.
